This film will give a negative idea about Muslims to viewers. In our considered view, it should be banned in its present form with immediate effect. The film contains blatant lies, e,g., Kamal Haasan shows that Taliban leader Mulla Umar was hiding in Madurai and Coimbatore, which is an absolutely incorrect.
"Vishwaroopam" was banned for two weeks in Tamil Nadu on January 24, 2013. The Tamil Nadu government decided to ‘suspend' its re¬lease by a fortnight fearing violent backlash from Mus¬lim outfits which said that it portrays their community as one breeding terror and hence demanded its ban. "Vishwaroopam" is scheduled for release in Telugu on 25 January and in Hindi on 1 February in other parts of the nation.
This is not the first incident where Kamal Haasan has committed an irresponsible act. In 1992, while Thevar Magan got into trouble for allegedly portraying the ‘Thevar' community, a dominant caste in South Tamil Nadu, and identifying them with glorified violence, Virumaandi in 2004 was embroiled in controversy for similar reasons. The film, which was originally titled ‘Sandiyar', drew flak and the team was forced to change it to ‘Virumaandi'.
Even before its release in theatres, Hey Ram, Kamal Haasan's ambitious venture in 2000, came under serious criticism, especially by the Congress Party for hurting public sentiments and showing Mahatma Gandhi in bad light. Protests were held throughout the country, screens were burnt down or pelted with stones and even audiences were attacked in some places.
A joint letter Request for banning the screening of the film ‘Vishwaroopam' (Hindi, Tamil and Telugu) will be given to the Prime Minsiter of India on Monday 28th Janaury 2013 on belhalf of
